After a foundation course at Wimbledon School of Art, Kate graduated with a degree in Fine Art Painting from the University of the West of England in 2000. Since then she has taken part in a number of group and solo exhibitions around the UK and has just finished illustrating her first book ‘A Cook And A Painter’.
Kate uses oil paint combined with chalk, oil pastel, emulsion and acrylic on canvas and board. Her vibrant paintings are a celebration of colour and mark-making and are influenced by artists such as Roger Hilton, Peter Lanyon, Fiona Ray and Gary Hume. A strong drawing background informs all Kate’s work. She works intuatively building up layers of colour around her drawings.
Kate picks up colour everywhere; retaining wrapping paper and decorative fabrics and keeping shopping bags for the right blue. Inspired by her surroundings when she travels, her landscapes focus on the atmosphere of a place, recapturing a feeling with strong colour combinations and large painterly brush strokes all of which expose her genuine enthusiasm for colour and the joy she feels when painting.
Kate also takes great delight in watching the birds coming to her garden from her studio. Seeing them revisit each day she found herself enchanted by their personalities and often humorous interaction. These works capture the birds decorative plumage and their playful characters, through Kate’s distinctive use of colour and draftmanship.
